Puffer jacket buying guide: six decisions before checkout

A puffer is not just an insulation category. Fashion puffers, city winter coats and technical alpine jackets can look similar while solving different problems.

1. Use case

City commuting, fashion styling and alpine use demand different priorities. Define the job before comparing brands.

2. Insulation

Check what the manufacturer actually specifies. Down, synthetic alternatives and hybrid systems differ in warmth, moisture behavior, care and packability.

3. Shell and weather claim

Distinguish wind resistance, water resistance and waterproofing. Do not upgrade a manufacturer's claim in your head.

4. Fit

Decide whether you want close, regular or intentionally oversized proportions. Use garment measurements where available.

5. Adjustability

Hems, hoods, cuffs and two-way zips can change comfort and styling flexibility.

6. Care

Read the garment care label before purchase if low-maintenance ownership matters. Specialty fabrics and trims may require professional cleaning.
